Hello from Hortonville
Jan 19th, 2010 at 10:17am

Hello:
My name is Dennis and I am a new member from Hortonville (12 miles NW of Appleton).

I have only been an audio enthusiast for the last 5 years. I left for many years because the emerging CD technology, to me, sounded bland and un-involving. Currently, I have settled on a vintage Motorola tube amp, Toshiba laptop, and an Edirol UA-5 usb interface/dac. My alternate source is a modded Sony DVP-S9000ES.

I still have some dis-satisfaction with my CD performance. My Sennheiser HD600 phones with the laptop (Foobar2000/Flac/Direct Sound out, without Edirol!) even sounds better.

I am now looking at replacing my Edirol. Does anyone have a mid to high end DAC they are willing to lend me for a short trial? It doesn't have to be a usb, as the Edirol has digital outs.

Welcome Dennis, good to have you aboard! There are several members within shouting range of you so I hope to see you face to face in the near future.

Sorry I can't help you with the DAC but welcome to NEWAS, Dennis!  I've only been at this seriously for 5 or 6 years myself.  It's good to have another tube guy aboard!

Hi Dennis,

I'm just a skip and a jump away from you on the North side of Appleton just off HWY41 and Ballard Rd.

I'm into tubes as well, I design and modify them as well as modify CDP's I have a vintage Sony X77ES that is highly modified that I use CDP direct to my 10 watt Single-Ended-Tube Amp with grunt capacity.

http://newaudiosociety.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1220618330/0

I have two vintage DAC's but they are on loan a Adcom and a Tubed California Audio Labs Sigma. While both of these have their merits my CDP is another league.

Now Doc has some nice affordable Dac's that we gave a spin here that were very smooth and can be used direct to your amp via remote control even too!

Another large thread of mine is here.

If your free sometime and are curious feel free to contact me for a visit!

With my last 3 system mod's my system has never been better and all from a not your everyday 10 watt SET Amp! Remember "A watt isn't just a watt"

And welcome to NEWAS they are a great bunch people to know!

Welcome aboard Dennis...dont' be shy!

Sorry, but I don't have a spare DAC to lend. Went to a single box player to get the jitter out. Naw, not really... just to simplify.

Many thanks for your responses. Yes, I just went to the Pacific Valve site. There several interesting options at reasonable prices. I'm leaning towards buying a Beresford TC-7520 direct for $279 shipped with a 30 day trial.

Yeah Doc Had the CityPulse 7.2X here it was pretty good its sins were that of omission rather than commission and it was very smooth and very musical.

It looks as though the review I read on the TC-7520 was that it was well liked!

Dennis:

Welcome!

I live near you (I am in Medina).

I have a Musical Fidelity A3.24 that I am not really using.  It's not SOTA, but it might help you decipher whether or not you are a fan of Upsampling.

I also have a Rega IO.  I am using it for my iPod/iTransport, but I could do without it for a short time.  I don't think it's as good a DAC as the MF, but I like it better than the MF with my iPod setup.

Email me if you want to hook up.  mahlernut@yahoo.com
